Match Report
25/08/2001 v PAST XI
Won
The Past team opened up with Alan Gregory in a familiar role, and John Nunn in a decidedly unfamiliar role. Thoughts that John would start playing for a draw were dispelled when he clattered Martin over mid on . Martin got his revenge with a perfectly pitched leggie, and John was gone for 16. Alan went on to play the sheet anchor role once again before being expertly stumped by Jock off the bowling of Smith. Martin- unused to bowling so many overs went on to take 3 for 67 from 14 overs, getting the prized scalp of Chris Jones. Gary Theobald came in at 4, eager to dispel his reputation for scoring the most ducks in a row for Old D's. A lusty blow for 4 got him off the mark, but he soon fell to Allen, who had begun a spell of 10 overs which brought 4 wickets. Carl, Scott Gregory and Sid Clench helped the total along to 117 for 8, though the highlight of the innings was when the gazebo blew down. ( Did I mention that Stringer got one to turn in the last over ??)
Clive and Steve Lawton opened against Gary Theobald. (Probably the last time we played on opposite teams was in Oakfield when we were at infant school.)
Stringer was almost caught first ball by Alan Gregory at short third man, the first of a succession of hard chances put down in that postion. Steve and Clive put on 63, which went most of the way to winning the match. Steve was bolwed by Chris Jones, but 73 year old Sid Clench accounted for Clive. Adam Deal secured the win with a solid ( I think this is a euphemism for slow) 28.
A very pleasant afternoon was had by all, and a very convivial evening in the upstairs room at Waller Park. Thanks by the way to 4 year old Benjamin and 5 year old Joe Allen who helped Jonathan and I put the ropes back up round the square when no other ****** could be bothered.
