Match Report

09/07/2000 v HEXTABLE

abandoned

The weather this year has been atrocious, and this match was played in dismal conditions. There was persistent drizzle throughout which made bowling rather difficult. The pitch however played quite well, and Tony and Clive got off to a good start. Clive eschewed the cut shot, which has got him out a few times this year, and indeed scored his first four from a front foot drive through the covers.

Tony meanwhile looked in good nick and hit a couple of trademark boudaries to the mid wicket fence. Clive was defeated by a gentle outswinger which he got the faintest of touches to- walking before the umpire had the chance to pronounce his fate. (Why am I so honest……..). This was a pitch made for Steve Lawton’s clean hitting, and playing very sensibly he went on to complete his first fifty for the club in 25 years. The only thing that looked like denying him was the weather, and indeed it became too heavy soon after his half century was posted, and we came off for an early tea. Tony had managed to score 43 before running himself out (shameless jug evasion), and Adam played sensibly for 8. Neil Grigg, 15 years old, (a very young side this one..) got a very good ball which flicked the top of the bails, after he had got off the mark with a stylish on-drive. A feature of the innings was the knock of Jock Steene, more for the hilarious incident where he fell over three times in the course of one run, (and still managed to get home) rather than for his quickfire 28- which in truth wasn’t one of his better innings.

Tea was very pleasant indeed, though the lack of electricity meant there wasn’t any cups of tea available, which would have washed done the pizza slices a treat.

The rain eased off enough for Hextable to take the field . Andrew Cruickshank marked out a suicidally long run in such treacherous underfoot conditions, and a back stop was put in place for the seemingly inevitable beamers. In fact Andrew bowled with considerable control and pace – and didn’t fall over once!. He managed to get two wickets, whilst Hextable raced to 50. Then the heavens really opened and the game had to be abandoned.
