Match Report

13/06/1999 v HARTLEY MANOR

Won

Heavy rain on the Saturday had made the Hartley pitch very damp and this had a big effect on the outcome of the match. Clive and Tony started against some very hostlie fast bowling from the pavillion end and the variable bounce made batting difficult. The bowling from the other end was gentler and Tony started off with some big hits for four. However it soon became apparent that batting was not straighforward at this end either as Tony mistimed a lofted off drive and was caught at mid-on.( A number of other wickets were to follow in the same way) .

Meanwhile Clive and Jock were fending off lifting deliveries from the fast bowler at the other end who was also making the ball swing away on occasion. Wickets then started to tumble at both ends mostly due to mistimed shots and Clive settled down to see off the openers. However as soon as the openers were replaced Clive was out for 28 to a inswinging yorker to leave Old Dartechs in serious trouble at 65 for 8. Kevin Nunn was to imporve matters significantly with a lusty 19 including some very well struck lofted drives and he was given good support by Martin who went on to make 8. Jonathan needless to say was left not out as Old Dartechs finally manged to muster exactly 100. One of Hartley's openers departed in the first over to a smart catch by Jonathan at short leg as Hartley also found scoring runs hard work. A number of hotly disputed LBW descision follwed and a run out courtesy of smart pick up by Bob More left Hartley in real trouble at 15 for 5. Bob went on to take his fith wicket before being replaced by Martin. Richard Coverly bowled tightly at the other end , and deserved more that his single wicket. Hartley made a spirited comeback after the seventh wicket fell at 35 and at one stage it looked as if they would carry Hartley on to an unlikely victory. However Steve Jones induced a false shot off the legs, and once again Jonathan moved quickly to his left to pick up another good catch. This left Harltey with 18 to get in 6 overs and they managed another 10 before Bob More returned to take his sixth wicket and finish the match.
